What is Terrazzo flooring
Terrazzo flooring are a unique natural stone finish that contains marble chips of different colors and sizes and is held together with a cement base or, with newer terrazzo stone applications, with resin or epoxy base.
Terrazzo tiles and flooring can be restored using the same methods that is used in restoring granite and marble tile flooring. Most Terrazzo floors are coated with a wax and the waxes sometimes have a tendency to collect dirt and yellow which will require stripping and also re-waxing.
Terrazzo flooring can be polished using natural polishing process that eliminates the need to strip off the old wax finishes and can also reduce later maintenance cost. We return terrazzo flooring back to its natural finish with the following steps:
- Machine scrub/strip existing floor to remove existing stains and blemishes
- Grind terrazzo floor with several diamond-bonded disks which will remove all scratches and complete the smoothing process. The various diamond grades reduce scratches, allowing the natural crystals on the surface to reflect light more effectively
- Polish the terrazzo floor with a special powder that gives the floor a hard glass like finish. This polishing restores luster to the chips and produces a very durable high-shine to ensure the stone stays beautiful.
Eliminating the Continuing Need for Stripping and Waxing
It is often the practice to coat or wax terrazzo to achieve a polished look, but these coatings have a tendency to yellow and collect dirt and must be repeatedly stripped and reapplied.
We find this coating process to be not only time-consuming and costly, but also unnecessary. Using the same process used to restore marble and other natural stone, terrazzo can be honed and polished to achieve both glossy and matte finishes without the need for coatings.
